Are you worried about your child opting for the snacks and beverages sold outside school? Much to your dismay, they rush to the school side canteen to gorge on samosas, crispy chips, and noodles, unaware of their high cholesterol content. The humble home-cooked food takes a beating against these attractive options. Blame it on the food joints and small shops selling street food outside their schools.

FSSAI has banned the sale of Junk Food –Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken the bold step of banning the sale of junk foods to students. All foods that are high in saturated fats or added sugar or sodium will be off the menu. Also, the sale and advisement of junk food within 50 meters of schools is prohibited. A license will have to be obtained for selling or catering school meals by the school authority itself or FBOs contracted by the school authority.

The FBO’s (restaurants, shops, wholesalers, suppliers, canteens) must register with proper FSSAI license. All FBO’s should comply with the requirements of sanitary and hygienic practices under schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
